The Last Train — long story

Sarah meets a kind old man at a train station while waiting for the last train to London.

It was a cold winter evening. Sarah stood at the train station, holding her suitcase tightly. She had to catch the last train to London. If she missed it, she would have no way to get there until morning.

The station was almost empty. Most people had already gone home. The information board showed that the train would arrive in ten minutes. Sarah checked her watch. It was 11:50 PM. The train was scheduled for midnight.

She walked to the small cafe near the platform. It was still open, but the woman behind the counter was cleaning up. "Can I get a coffee?" Sarah asked. The woman looked at her kindly. "Of course, dear. Are you waiting for the last train?" Sarah nodded.

While Sarah was drinking her coffee, an old man sat down next to her. He was wearing a heavy coat and a wool hat. "Waiting for the train too?" he asked. Sarah said yes. They started talking.

The old man's name was George. He told Sarah that he had lived in this town for fifty years. "I remember when this station was full of people every day. Trains came every hour. Now, there is only one train at night." He sounded sad.

Sarah told George about her life. She was moving to London for a new job. She was excited but also nervous. "Starting something new is always scary," George said. "But it is also exciting. The best things in life happen when you are brave enough to try."

At 11:58, they heard the sound of the train. George stood up and shook Sarah's hand. "Good luck in London," he said with a warm smile. Sarah thanked him and hurried to the platform.

The train arrived exactly at midnight. Sarah got on and found a seat by the window. As the train started moving, she looked back at the station. She could see George standing on the platform, waving goodbye. Sarah waved back and felt tears in her eyes.

That night, on the last train to London, Sarah made a promise to herself. She would always be kind to strangers. She would always take time to talk to people. Because sometimes, a short conversation with a stranger can change your whole life.
