A grandmother remembers her entire life through colors, leaving behind a garden that blooms in every hue.
My grandmother had a special way of remembering things. She did not remember dates or numbers. She remembered colors. "The day your grandfather proposed was yellow," she would say. "The day we moved to this house was green. The day you were born was purple."
I never understood what she meant until the day she told me the story of her life. We were sitting in her garden, surrounded by flowers of every color. She was ninety-two years old, but her eyes were still bright and full of life.
She started with her childhood. "My childhood was blue," she said. "We lived by the sea. The sky was always blue, and the water was always blue. My father was a fisherman. He would leave before sunrise and come back after sunset. My mother would wait for him by the window. She was always worried."
Then she talked about her teenage years. "My teenage years were red. I was full of energy and anger. I fought with my parents. I argued with my teachers. I thought I knew everything. I was young and foolish." She laughed softly.
"The year I met your grandfather was orange. He was a soldier. He came to our town on a Tuesday. I saw him at the market. He was buying oranges. That is why I remember. He had the most beautiful smile I had ever seen. We talked for three hours that day. I knew he was the one."
My grandmother continued. "The war years were black. Your grandfather had to leave. There were bombs. There was fear. Every night, I lit a candle and prayed for his safe return. For three years, I did not know if he was alive or dead. Those were the longest years of my life."
"But when he came back, everything was white. White like fresh snow. White like a new beginning. We got married. We had children. We built this house. Life started again."
She paused and looked at the flowers around her. "And now," she said, "my life is every color. I have experienced everything - joy, sorrow, love, loss, hope, and fear. Every memory has its own color. And when I close my eyes, I see the most beautiful painting in the world. It is the painting of my life."
I held her hand and looked at her face. She was smiling. Her eyes were closed. She looked peaceful. That was the last time I saw her. She passed away the next morning, in her garden, surrounded by the colors she loved.
I buried her in that garden. Every spring, flowers of every color bloom around her grave. Red roses, yellow sunflowers, blue forget-me-nots, orange marigolds, and purple lavenders. It is the most beautiful painting I have ever seen. It is the color of her memory.
