Hello and welcome to the World Briefing. I'm Laura Kim, and here's what's happening around the globe.
First, electric cars. Sales of electric vehicles have passed a quarter of all new car sales in Europe for the first time. The main reason is falling battery prices, which have dropped by nearly half in three years. Charging networks are also expanding quickly, making long trips easier. Analysts expect the number to keep climbing as more affordable models reach the market.
Second, money. A major Asian economy has begun a pilot program for its own digital currency, managed by the central bank. Unlike cryptocurrencies, this digital money is controlled by the government and designed to be as stable as cash. Citizens can pay with a phone app even without an internet connection. Supporters say it will cut costs; critics worry about privacy.
And finally, space. The next lunar mission will carry a robotic lander to the Moon's south pole later this year. The lander will search for water ice in shadowed craters, testing technology that could support future human bases. If the mission succeeds, it will be the first time any country lands near the pole.
