How to structure a perfect cue card answer in IELTS Speaking Part 2, with a full worked example.
Hello, and welcome to the IELTS podcast. I'm Sarah Mitchell, and today we're tackling Speaking Part 2 — the one-minute preparation and two-minute talk.
First, let's understand the task. You receive a card with a topic and four bullet points. You have one minute to prepare, then you must speak for one to two minutes. The examiner will stop you at two minutes, and there are no marks for speaking longer.
The biggest mistake students make is trying to cover all four bullets equally. That produces a list, not a story. Instead, think of your answer as a short story with a clear beginning, middle and end.
Here's a structure that works. First, one sentence to introduce the topic. For example: "I'd like to talk about my grandmother's house, where I spent every summer as a child." Second, two or three sentences describing the place or thing. Third, the story — something that happened there. Finally, one sentence explaining why it matters to you.
Let me show you with a full example. Imagine the card says: Describe a place where you feel relaxed.
"I'd like to talk about my grandmother's house in the countryside. It's an old stone building surrounded by walnut trees, with a small garden at the back. I spent every summer there as a child. The thing I love most is the silence — no traffic, no phones, just birds and wind. I remember one summer evening, we sat on the roof drinking tea while the sun went down behind the mountains. That memory always calms me. Now, whenever I feel stressed, I close my eyes and picture that evening. That's why the house is my happy place."
Notice what I did. I covered all four bullets — where, what, what happens, why — but I wrapped them in a story with feeling.
For your preparation minute, write down just three words: place, story, feeling. That's your whole plan. Don't write full sentences; you'll waste the minute.
That's all for today. Try this structure with a topic of your choice, and record yourself to check your timing. Good luck, and see you next time!
