Learn the essay structure that examiners reward, plus the planning habits that raise your band score.
Welcome back to the IELTS podcast. I'm James Anderson, and today we're looking at Writing Task 2 — the essay that carries two-thirds of your writing score.
You have forty minutes to write at least two hundred and fifty words. Most students start typing immediately and regret it later. The highest-scoring writers spend five minutes planning and thirty-five writing. Let me show you the structure.
Paragraph one is the introduction. Two sentences: paraphrase the question, then state your position. For example, if the question asks whether cities should ban cars, your introduction might say: "The growing number of private cars in urban areas has become a serious problem. In my view, introducing restrictions on car use is both necessary and effective."
Paragraph two is your first reason. Start with a topic sentence, then explain, then give one concrete example. A specific example — a city, a study, a personal observation — is what separates band six from band seven.
Paragraph three is your second reason, and here you should also address the counter-argument. A sentence like "Admittedly, some argue that..." shows the examiner you can see both sides. Then return to your position.
Paragraph four is the conclusion. Do not copy your introduction. Restate your view in new words and add a forward-looking sentence: "If cities invest in public transport alongside restrictions, the transition will be far smoother."
Now, two habits that improve scores quickly. First, learn paraphrasing: keep a notebook of synonyms for common essay words — important, problem, increase, people, government. Second, check your verb tenses in the final three minutes. Most grammar errors are tense errors, and most tense errors happen under time pressure.
That's the structure. Five minutes planning, four clear paragraphs, a specific example, and a final grammar check. Practice it once a week, and you will see the difference. Good luck with your preparation!
