Three science stories from this week: a fusion energy record, a new deep-sea species, and why bees are making a comeback.
Welcome to the Week in Science. I'm Daniel Carter, and here are three stories scientists are talking about this week.
First, fusion energy. Researchers at a laboratory in the United States announced that they held a fusion reaction for longer than ever before — a full fifty seconds. Fusion, the same process that powers the sun, promises nearly unlimited clean energy. The breakthrough is not electricity yet, but it is the longest sustained reaction on record, and engineers say it brings a working reactor closer than many believed possible.
Second, the ocean. A deep-sea expedition in the Pacific returned with images of a species of snailfish never documented before. Living more than eight thousand meters down, the fish is almost translucent, with no scales and enormous eyes. Scientists say the discovery is a reminder that we have mapped more of the surface of Mars than of our own seabed.
Finally, some good news for the environment. Bee populations in three European countries have grown for the fourth year in a row. The recovery is linked to reduced pesticide use and wildflower corridors planted along farm borders. Beekeepers warn that the trend is fragile, but for now, the buzz is back.
That's all for this week's science roundup. If you want to practice the vocabulary from today, listen again and write down any word connected to energy, the ocean, or nature. Until next time, stay curious!
