The Secret Life of Bees

Bees pollinate one-third of our food and have sophisticated social structures, but face declining populations due to pesticides and Colony Collapse Disorder.

Bees are some of the most important creatures on our planet. Without their pollination services, many of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts we eat would simply not exist. Bees pollinate approximately one-third of all the food we consume, making them essential to both human nutrition and global food security.

A honeybee colony is a marvel of social organization. A single colony can contain up to sixty thousand bees, all working together in a highly coordinated system. The queen is the only female who reproduces, laying up to two thousand eggs per day during peak season. Worker bees, all female, perform different tasks depending on their age: young workers clean cells, middle-aged workers process food and build wax comb, and the oldest workers serve as foragers, collecting nectar, pollen, and water.

Bees communicate with each other through an elaborate dance language. When a forager discovers a rich source of nectar, it performs a waggle dance inside the hive to tell other bees the direction and distance of the food source. The angle of the dance relative to the sun indicates direction, while the duration of the waggle indicates distance.

Sadly, bee populations around the world are declining at alarming rates. A phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder has caused the sudden disappearance of worker bees from hives. Pesticides, particularly neonicotinoids, are a major factor, along with parasites, disease, and loss of natural habitat. Many countries have begun banning certain pesticides and creating wildflower meadows to support bee populations.
