Migratory Birds: Epic Journeys

Billions of birds migrate thousands of kilometers annually, navigating by magnetic fields and stars, but face threats from habitat loss and climate change.

Every year, billions of birds undertake extraordinary journeys spanning thousands of kilometers between their breeding and wintering grounds. These migrations are among the most remarkable phenomena in the natural world, driven by the search for food, suitable breeding sites, and favorable climate conditions.

The Arctic tern holds the record for the longest migration of any animal. This small seabird travels approximately seventy thousand kilometers each year, flying from its Arctic breeding grounds to the Antarctic and back again. Over its lifetime of about thirty years, an Arctic tern may travel the equivalent of three round trips to the moon.

Many migratory birds navigate using a combination of the Earth's magnetic field, the position of the sun and stars, and familiar landmarks. Some species, like the bar-tailed godwit, can fly non-stop for over eleven thousand kilometers across the Pacific Ocean, relying on stored fat reserves for energy. This incredible feat requires precise internal navigation systems that scientists are still working to fully understand.

Unfortunately, migratory birds face numerous threats along their routes. Habitat destruction at stopover sites, where birds rest and refuel, can be catastrophic. Light pollution from cities disorients birds during night migrations, causing collisions with buildings. Climate change is also shifting the timing of seasons, creating mismatches between bird arrivals and the availability of their food sources.

Conservation of migratory birds requires international cooperation, as their routes often cross multiple country boundaries. Organizations like the Convention on Migratory Species work to coordinate protection efforts across nations.
