Coral Reefs: Rainforests of the Sea

Coral reefs support twenty-five percent of marine species but face severe threats from climate change, with up to ninety percent at risk by 2050.

Coral reefs are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, supporting approximately twenty-five percent of all marine species despite covering less than one percent of the ocean floor. Often called the rainforests of the sea, these vibrant underwater structures are built by tiny animals called coral polyps, which secrete calcium carbonate to form hard limestone skeletons.

The Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia is the largest coral reef system in the world, stretching over two thousand three hundred kilometers and comprising nearly three thousand individual reef systems. It is visible from space and supports over one thousand five hundred species of fish, four hundred types of coral, and countless other marine organisms.

However, coral reefs worldwide are under severe threat from climate change. Rising ocean temperatures cause coral bleaching, a phenomenon in which stressed corals expel the symbiotic algae that provide them with food and color. Without these algae, the corals turn white and, if temperatures do not return to normal quickly, they die. The Great Barrier Reef has experienced several mass bleaching events in recent years, with some sections losing up to fifty percent of their coral cover.

Ocean acidification, pollution, overfishing, and coastal development further compound the threats to coral ecosystems. Scientists estimate that without urgent action, up to ninety percent of the world's coral reefs could be lost by twenty-fifty. Protecting and restoring coral reefs is essential not only for marine biodiversity but also for the hundreds of millions of people who depend on reefs for food, income from tourism, and coastal protection.
