After 32 years, a lighthouse keeper faces retirement when the lighthouse is automated.
Thomas had been the keeper of the lighthouse on Whitmore Island for thirty-two years. Every evening, he climbed the spiral staircase, lit the beacon, and watched over the dark waters below. He had seen storms that shook the stone walls and calm nights where the sea mirrored the stars. When the government announced they were automating the lighthouse and would no longer need a keeper, Thomas felt as though part of him was being switched off. On his last night, he climbed the stairs one final time. He looked out at the horizon, where the beam of light swept across the waves. "Someone had to care," he whispered to no one. Then he turned off the light, locked the door, and left the island for good.
