A long-awaited letter from a brother abroad brings peace and a sense of connection.
Reza had not heard from his brother, who had emigrated to Canada, in six months. He worried every day. Then, one evening, a letter arrived. It was handwritten, in his brother's messy but familiar script. The letter described a new life: a small apartment, a new job at a hospital, and a friend who had taught him to skate on frozen ponds. "I know I never call," his brother wrote. "But I carry this town in my heart. I miss the smell of our street after rain and the sound of the call to prayer at dawn. I have not forgotten home — I have just learned to live with the distance." Reza read the letter three times. He placed it in a drawer with his most precious things. That night, for the first time in months, he slept peacefully, knowing his brother was okay.
