After forty years, a lighthouse keeper teaches his successor to trust the sea before passing on the key.
For forty years, Elias had kept the lighthouse on Black Rock Island. Every night, he lit the lamp and watched the sea. Ships came and went, guided by his light. He knew the ocean like an old friend. Then the government sent a message: the lighthouse would become automatic, and his job was no longer needed. A young woman named Anna arrived to learn from him for the last month. She expected to find an angry old man, but Elias was kind and patient. He taught her how to clean the lens, how to read the weather, and how to trust the silence. "The sea always tells the truth," he said. On his last night, Elias climbed the tower one final time and lit the lamp with care. Anna watched from below. In the morning, he packed his small bag and walked to the boat. Before he left, he pressed the key to the lighthouse door into Anna's hand. "It is yours now," he said. "Take care of it." She nodded, and the light burned on.
