The Last Letter — short story

Miriam discovers her grandfather's wartime love letters and connects with a stranger from the past.

When Miriam opened the attic, the smell of old paper filled the air. She had not been up there since her grandmother passed away three years ago. On top of an old wooden chest, she found a bundle of letters tied with a faded blue ribbon. They were love letters, written by her grandfather to her grandmother during the war. She had never known her grandfather — he had died before she was born. As she read the letters, a stranger became alive through ink and paper. His words were tender, hopeful, and deeply human. In the last letter, he wrote, "I carry your photograph in my pocket, and every time I look at it, I remember why I must come home." He never did come home. Miriam sat on the dusty floor, holding the letters to her chest, and wept for a man she had never met but suddenly loved dearly.
