The Glassblower's Apprentice — short story

A glassblower's apprentice learns that true skill comes from learning to let go.

In the narrow streets of Murano, the furnaces never went cold. Marco was the newest apprentice in Master Bellini's workshop, a boy of sixteen with trembling hands and burning ambition. His first task was simple: blow glass into a smooth, round bubble. He failed again and again. Each time, the glass cracked, collapsed, or formed crooked shapes. "You are fighting the glass," Master Bellini said. "You must become its partner." Marco watched the master work — the easy breath, the gentle turn of the rod, the quiet patience. He stopped forcing and started listening. After months, his bubble was round and perfect. But the master gave him a harder task: shape a delicate glass swan. It took a year. On the day Marco finished, the swan caught the light and seemed almost alive. Master Bellini examined it slowly. "This is good work," he said. "Now break it." Marco stared. "Why?" he asked. "Because the first thing you love, you love too much," the master said. "You must learn to let go." Marco broke the swan, and its pieces glittered on the floor like fallen stars. From that day, he worked without fear, and his glass sang in the fire.
