The Bicycle Race — short story

Ali gives up the chance to win a race to help his friend, and earns everyone's respect.

Every summer, the town held a bicycle race. Ali wanted to win more than anything. He practiced every morning before school, riding up and down the hills until his legs ached. On the day of the race, he felt nervous but ready. The race began, and Ali quickly took the lead. Then, near the finish line, he saw his friend Sara on the side of the road. Her bicycle had a flat tire, and she looked sad. Ali had a choice: win the race or help his friend. He stopped, helped Sara fix her tire, and they rode to the finish line together. Ali did not win, but everyone cheered for him. The mayor gave him a special prize for the best sportsmanship. Ali learned that helping others was better than any trophy.
