The British Heart Foundation has updated its exercise guidelines, saying that 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week is enough to keep most adults healthy. Previously, the recommendation was 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, which many people found difficult to achieve. The new guidelines are based on a large study of 80,000 adults in the UK that tracked health outcomes over ten years. Researchers found that people who walked briskly for just 30 minutes daily had a 35 percent lower risk of heart disease and a 25 percent lower risk of early death compared to those who were inactive. Walking is free, requires no equipment, and can be done almost anywhere. Health experts hope the simpler recommendation will encourage more people to stay active.
