Marine biologists aboard the research vessel Abyss Explorer have discovered a previously unknown species of jellyfish living at a depth of 4,000 meters in the Pacific Ocean. The species, which has been named Luminostella abyssalis, produces an intense blue-green bioluminescence that it uses to attract prey in the pitch-black deep sea. Unlike most bioluminescent creatures, which produce light through chemical reactions in their tissues, this jellyfish appears to use a unique protein structure that has never been observed before. The discovery was made during an expedition funded by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, and researchers believe it could lead to new developments in bio-inspired lighting technology. The finding also highlights how much of the deep ocean remains unexplored, with scientists estimating that over 80 percent of the ocean floor has never been studied.
