Chinese energy company Sungrow has completed installation of the world's largest floating solar photovoltaic facility on the flooded site of a decommissioned coal mine in Anhui province. The 1.2-gigawatt installation covers approximately 1,300 hectares of water surface and is expected to generate enough electricity to power 950,000 homes annually while offsetting roughly 800,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. The project represents a powerful symbol of China's broader energy transition, as the country simultaneously remains the world's largest consumer of coal. Floating solar installations offer several advantages over traditional ground-mounted panels, including reduced land use, natural cooling from the water surface which increases efficiency, and decreased evaporation from the reservoir. China now operates seven of the world's ten largest floating solar farms, with total installed capacity exceeding 5 gigawatts.
