A new artificial intelligence system developed by researchers at Stanford Medical School can detect early-stage cancers in blood tests up to two years before traditional diagnostic methods. The AI analyzes patterns in cell-free DNA fragments, which are tiny pieces of genetic material that tumor cells release into the bloodstream. In a study of 30,000 patients, the system correctly identified 87 percent of early-stage cancers across eight different types, including pancreatic and ovarian cancer, which are notoriously difficult to detect early. The technology, called CancerSEEK, requires only a standard blood draw and could be incorporated into routine health checkups. Medical experts are calling the results promising but emphasize that further testing in diverse populations is needed before the tool can be widely used in clinics.
