Study Links Ultra-Processed Foods to Higher Depression Risk

Graded English news article at A1 level.

Scientists in Australia have found that people who eat a lot of ultra-processed foods like chips, soda, and frozen meals are more likely to feel depressed. The study followed 12,000 adults over five years. People who ate the most processed food were 40 percent more likely to develop depression than those who ate mostly fresh food. Ultra-processed foods contain many additives, sugar, and unhealthy fats that may harm brain health. The researchers said eating more fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains can help protect mental health. This does not mean people can never eat processed food, but eating less of it may improve mood and energy.
