Understanding British pub etiquette is essential for anyone living in or visiting the UK.
Cheers! I'm Emily, and today we're going to the pub! But not just any pub — we're learning about British pub culture.
First, ordering drinks. In a British pub, you usually order at the bar, not at your table. Walk up and wait your turn. When it's your turn, say: "Can I get a pint of lager, please?" or "A glass of white wine, please."
"Pub grub" is food served at pubs. Popular dishes include: fish and chips, pie and mash, and Sunday roast.
Pub etiquette: Don't clap when your friend drops a glass. That's actually a myth — it doesn't really happen!
"Round buying" is very British. If you're with friends, one person buys drinks for everyone, then the next person buys the next round. It's your turn: "It's my round. What's everyone having?"
"Last orders" means the bar is closing soon. You'll hear: "Last orders at the bar!" This usually happens at 11 PM.
Traditional pub games: Darts, pool, and pub quizzes. A "pub quiz" is a trivia competition, usually on a weekday evening.
Closing time: "Time, gentlemen, please!" means the pub is closing.
