From "lift" to "elevator," learn the most important differences between British and American English.
Welcome to our special episode! I'm Emily from Britain, and I'm Sarah from America. Today we're comparing British and American English!
Let's start with everyday words. In Britain, you take the "lift." In America, it's the "elevator." In Britain, you go to the "flat." In America, it's the "apartment."
Food differences: Brits say "chips" for what Americans call "fries." But what Brits call "crisps," Americans call "chips." Confusing, right?
At the store: In Britain, you go to the "chemist" or "pharmacy." In America, it's the "drugstore" or "pharmacy."
Cars: In Britain, you drive on the "motorway." In America, it's the "highway" or "freeway." The "bonnet" in Britain is the "hood" in America. The "boot" is the "trunk."
Time: "Quarter past two" is the same, but Americans might say "two fifteen." "Half past two" vs "two thirty."
Spelling: Colour vs Color, Favourite vs Favorite, Organise vs Organize.
Pronunciation: "Water" in Britain sounds like "woh-tuh." In America, it's "waw-der."
