Move beyond "sunny" and "rainy" with twenty essential weather words and phrases.
Hey everyone, James here! Today we're expanding your weather vocabulary far beyond "hot" and "cold."
First, let's talk about rain. "Drizzle" is very light rain. "Shower" is short rain that comes and goes. "Downpour" is heavy rain that starts suddenly.
Now for clouds and sky. "Overcast" means the sky is completely covered with clouds. "Clear" means no clouds at all. "Hazy" means you can't see far because of air pollution or heat.
Temperature words: "Mild" is neither hot nor cold. "Chilly" is a little cold. "Freezing" is very cold. "Boiling" is very hot.
Wind words: "Breeze" is a gentle wind. "Gust" is a short, strong burst of wind. "Gale" is a very strong wind, usually at sea.
Weather events: "Fog" is thick cloud near the ground. "Frost" is ice on surfaces on cold mornings. "Hail" is ice falling from the sky. "Thunderstorm" is heavy rain with lightning and thunder.
Extreme weather: "Heatwave" is a period of unusually hot weather. "Blizzard" is a heavy snowstorm with strong wind.
Here's a great phrase for daily conversation: "It's pouring down" means it's raining very heavily. And "The weather is unpredictable" is perfect for describing changeable days.
Try to use five of these words in conversation this week. Your English will instantly sound more natural. See you next time!
