Graded English news article at B1 level.

UNESCO released its Global Education Monitoring Report on Thursday, showing that the worldwide adult literacy rate has reached 92 percent, the highest level ever recorded. The report attributes the improvement to sustained investment in primary education, the expansion of digital learning platforms, and targeted programs for women and girls in developing nations. Sub-Saharan Africa saw the greatest gains, with literacy increasing from 65 percent in 2015 to 81 percent today. However, the report also notes that 620 million adults worldwide still cannot read or write, and that progress has slowed in countries affected by conflict and climate disasters. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay emphasized that literacy is the foundation of all learning and called on the international community to maintain its commitment to universal education.
