A team of marine scientists has discovered a new species of octopus living nearly three kilometers below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. The creature, which has been named "translucent pearl" because of its see-through body, was filmed by a remote-controlled underwater vehicle during a research expedition. The scientists found more than thirty individuals near a deep-sea thermal vent, where superheated water rises from beneath the ocean floor. Dr. Liu Wei, the team leader, said the discovery shows how much of the ocean remains unexplored. "We still know more about the surface of Mars than about the deepest parts of our own oceans," she said. The team plans to return to the site next year to study how the new species lives and reproduces.
