Festivals of Light Around the World

Festivals of light like Diwali, Hanukkah, and the Lantern Festival are celebrated worldwide, symbolizing hope, renewal, and the triumph of good over evil.

Festivals of light are celebrated by many cultures and religions around the world, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. Despite arising from different traditions, these celebrations share a common theme of illumination and joy.

Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the world. Observed in October or November, it commemorates the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom after fourteen years of exile. Homes and streets are decorated with oil lamps called diyas, colorful rangoli patterns, and fireworks. Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and is a time for family gatherings, feasting, and exchanging gifts.

Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, is an eight-day celebration that commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. A special menorah candle holder with nine candles is lit, one additional candle each night. Families gather to play games, eat foods fried in oil like latkes, and give gifts. The miracle of the oil, where a small amount burned for eight days, is central to the holiday.

The Lantern Festival marks the end of Chinese New Year celebrations. People release paper lanterns into the sky and onto rivers, symbolizing letting go of the past and welcoming a fresh start. The lanterns create breathtaking displays of light against the night sky.

Loy Krathong is a beautiful Thai festival where people release decorated floating baskets called krathongs onto rivers and waterways. Each krathong carries a candle, incense, and flowers, symbolizing letting go of anger and bad luck while making wishes for the future.
