Frozen water hidden in the Moon polar craters could fuel future lunar bases and reshape space exploration.
For decades, scientists believed the Moon was completely dry. The Apollo samples brought back in the 1970s contained no water, and the assumption stuck for half a century. That view has changed dramatically in the last fifteen years.
In 2009, an instrument on the Indian Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft detected the signature of water molecules in the Moon's polar regions. Later missions confirmed the discovery: frozen water exists in permanently shadowed craters at the poles, where sunlight never reaches and temperatures drop to minus 230 degrees Celsius.
The discovery matters for a practical reason. If astronauts can extract water from the Moon, they can drink it, grow food with it, and split it into hydrogen and oxygen for rocket fuel. This is the foundation of the idea of a lunar base that does not depend on supplies from Earth.
NASA's Artemis program plans to send astronauts to the lunar south pole in the coming years, precisely because that region is rich in shadowed craters that may hold ice. Robots will first map the deposits and test extraction methods. The water may also help answer a deeper scientific question: where did Earth's own water come from?
The Moon, once seen as a barren rock, is now viewed as a stepping stone for human exploration of the solar system. Whether it becomes a fuel station or simply a scientific outpost, the ice hidden in its shadows could shape the future of space travel.
