How Quantum Computers Work

Quantum computers use qubits and superposition to process information in ways classical computers cannot.

Quantum computers represent a revolutionary approach to computation that harnesses the principles of quantum mechanics. Unlike classical computers, which process information in binary bits that are either zero or one, quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits, that can exist in multiple states simultaneously through a phenomenon known as superposition.

This ability allows quantum computers to process vast amounts of information in parallel. A quantum computer with just 300 qubits could theoretically represent more states than there are atoms in the observable universe. This makes them incredibly powerful for certain types of calculations, such as cryptography, drug discovery, and optimization problems.

One of the key challenges in quantum computing is maintaining coherence. Qubits are extremely fragile and can be disrupted by even the slightest environmental interference, a problem known as decoherence. To address this, quantum computers must be kept at temperatures near absolute zero and isolated from all external vibrations.

Major technology companies including IBM, Google, and Microsoft are investing billions of dollars in quantum computing research. In 2019, Google claimed to have achieved quantum supremacy, demonstrating that their quantum processor could solve a specific problem in 200 seconds that would take the world's most powerful supercomputer approximately 10,000 years.

Despite these advances, practical, large-scale quantum computers remain years away. Scientists continue to work on increasing the number of stable qubits and developing better error correction methods. The potential impact of quantum computing on fields ranging from medicine to artificial intelligence makes it one of the most exciting areas of modern science.
