A sixth mass extinction driven by human activity is eliminating species at rates 100-1000 times higher than natural levels, threatening ecosystem stability worldwide.
Throughout Earth's history, there have been five major mass extinction events, each wiping out between seventy and ninety-six percent of all species. Scientists now believe we are in the midst of a sixth mass extinction, driven primarily by human activity.
The five previous mass extinctions were caused by catastrophic events such as asteroid impacts, volcanic eruptions, and rapid climate changes. The most famous, the Cretaceous extinction sixty-six million years ago, eliminated the dinosaurs and approximately seventy-five percent of all species.
The current extinction crisis differs from previous events in its cause and speed. Rather than a single catastrophic event, today's extinctions result from habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation, invasive species, and climate change. Species are disappearing at rates estimated to be one hundred to one thousand times higher than natural background rates.
Amphibians are among the most threatened groups, with over forty percent of species at risk of extinction. Coral reefs, which support approximately twenty-five percent of all marine species, face mass bleaching events driven by warming oceans. Insect populations have declined dramatically in many regions.
The loss of biodiversity has cascading effects throughout ecosystems. When pollinators decline, crop production suffers. When predators disappear, prey populations can explode, devastating vegetation. Each species lost weakens the resilience of the ecosystem as a whole.
Conservation efforts include habitat protection, breeding programs for endangered species, and international agreements like the Convention on Biological Diversity. However, current efforts are insufficient to reverse the trajectory of biodiversity loss without fundamental changes to how we manage natural resources.
